As Hanna Blade is revealed in the strong and direct story, the readers are drawn deep into the shadow world working behind the scenes, under the veil of an imbedded system of classified decision-making, and supported by secrecy that ensues that corruption is not held responsible. The novel reveals the unsafe overlap of intelligence service, ethical corruption and covert missions; how a young survivor becomes a hero to battle the same power that destroyed her family.
The novel starts with the mission, which is clandestine thus
initiating the tragedy. The father of Noriko Ajiro, later to be revealed as
Hanna Blade, is a deep-undercover agent who is infiltrated into criminal groups
as a source of sensitive information that would bring down strong criminal
groups. He needs quietness, invisibility and total immersion into the world he
is exploring. But this very system that was to help him turns out to be the one
to close his end. With the help of tainted intelligence and tainted statistics,
Akira is falsely labeled as dangerous. Based on this misinformation, a team of
black-ops consisting of Anthony, Frank, and Daryl goes on a deadly raid,
killing both Akira and his wife.
This is a tragic event that reveals the impact of corruption
in the covert operations and how it can be disastrous. The intelligence system,
which is compromised in its own ranks, uses deadly force going on false
premises, rather than finding the truth. The violence that is perpetrated in
the name of safeguarding national interest turns out to be the point that
demolishes the Ajiro family and sends young Noriko to a life of fear, loss and
ultimately a just cause of seeking justice.
The secret world which claimed her parents haunts Noriko as
she runs out of Osaka and becomes Hanna Parker. Her survival takes her to New
York library across the ocean which gives her an opportunity to meet Anton, a
former intelligence operative and he alters her destiny.
Anton is aware of the definite indications of a person who
is escaping undercover. His instincts which are developed by years spent within
the intelligence community are immediately aware of the shadows that are
stalking her. He provides her with shelter and supports that Hanna severely
requires together with Susan and their close friend Joseph.
The files, notebooks, and intelligence reports left by her
father are the starting point of Hanna entering the world that he was working
in in an encrypted form. As she matures and becomes stronger, she applies her
extraordinary memory and disciplined psyche to unravel the truth that the
reality was buried by the strong institutions. Those notes shed light on the
corruptness of the operation that led to the death of her parents and the roles
of Anthony, Frank, and Daryl are not that of heroic agents but rather those who
execute orders influenced by lies, irresponsibility, and corruption.
With the help of these revelations, Hanna Blade introduces
readers to the threat of uncontrolled power in the intelligence structures. It
shows how undercover operations may be perverted through deceit, how truth may
be hidden within wrappings of highly classified secrets, and how the lives of
innocent people may be sacrificed in conflicts waged out of the notice of
others.
The process of Hanna becoming an orphaned survivor and then
a vengeant person takes place in this same dark world. Her quest to ensure
justice uses the strategies that the men who ruined her family used. She and
her accomplices employ surveillance devices, tactics of operations, subversion
strategies, GPS positioning, and the art of intelligence gathering to slowly
break down the web of corruption and wipe out every target. The accuracy of a
person who realizes the realities of the covert world, and has learned its
techniques to live in it, can be seen in her fight with Anthony in Miami.
One that is constructed on the basis of secrets, which is justified by power and is controlled by corruption. The experience of Hanna helps to see the truth in those shadows and to realize the catastrophic effects of the unaccountable decision-making.
